2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic

2010 Mercedes Benz GLK350 4Matic

The hills and canyons above Malibu are a well-known playground for automotive enthusiasts. Warm weather and spectacular views make for a wonderful Sunday afternoon cruise, while winding roads and sparse traffic create a driver’s playground. Expensive sports cars are routinely seen here testing their limits, but soon visitors may well spot the new Mercedes-Benz GLK350 compact SUV attacking the turns with them.

Last year, Motor Trend garnered an exclusive first drive of the all-new GLK350 in the mountains of Spain, followed by another drive across Germany’s autobahn. Both experiences impressed, but we couldn’t help but wonder where this new cute ute will slot into the luxury SUV market. Now that we’ve conducted a thorough instrumented test, though, we have an answer.

Few Mercedes-Benz owners in the U.S. ever take their vehicles off-road, a reality the German automaker not only realizes but embraces. Thus, the GLK is targeted at affluent women — and it appears Mercedes has hit its mark. This baby Benz has clearly been refined for the on-road market.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
Following yesterday's photo leakage of the 2010 E-Class Estate, Mercedes has officially unveiled more images and info about the E-Class wagon, which officially joins the sedan and coupe variants.

The 2010 E-Class Estate gets a plethora of diesel and gas powered engines for Europe, while the US reportedly must make due only with the the E350 4matic variant. An E63 Estate is reportedly in the works, but who knows if it will come to the US. Especially since most car buyers in the US aren't fond of wagons...

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Prototype

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” is one of the coolest sports cars of all time. So named because of its unique, roof-hinged doors, the Gullwing was the Enzo of its era: stupendously fast, outrageously expensive, and styled to make an entrance. Clark Gable owned one; Andy Warhol painted one; Ava Gardner crashed one. No Mercedes sports car since, not even the Mercedes-McLaren SLR, has come close to matching the Gullwing’s iconic appeal.

The SLR was a bastard-child of a supercar that neither McLaren nor Mercedes-Benz engineers truly felt was their own. McLaren’s Gordon Murray, designer of championship-winning Brabham and McLaren grand prix racers, driving force behind the McLaren F1 supercar, thought the SLR overweight and overwrought; the antithesis of his personal automotive design philosophy. For their part, the Mercedes-Benz engineers were uneasy with McLaren’s free-wheeling, fast-moving development culture, and skeptical of its methods. The culture-clash car that resulted was blindingly fast and supremely robust, but oddly styled and strangely uninvolving to drive.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet
It's going to be freezing in Detroit next month for the Detroit Auto Show, but Mercedes-Benz has chosen the show as the official unveiling of the 2011 E-Class Cabriolet.

The replacement for the CLK Cabriolet is based on the E-Class coupe and can be powered by either a 268-hp 3.5L V6 in the E350 or a 382-hp 5.5L V8 in the E550. Although the trend has been for new convertibles to feature folding hardtops, the E-Class Cabriolet sticks to the soft top. The soft top only takes 20 seconds to open or close and it can be operated at speeds up to 25 mph. One of the benefits of a soft top is that it takes up less truck space. With the top up the cabriolet has 13.8 cu. ft. of space and with it down truck space is only decreased by 3.17 cu. ft.

Mercedes-Benz Twin-Turbo 5.5L V8 to Replace 6.2L V8 in AMG Models

Mercedes-Benz Twin-Turbo 5.5L
BMW and Audi are both ditching their large displacement engines for small more efficient engines with turbos, well it looks like Mercedes-Benz is also about to follow the trend. The latest reports are claiming that Mercedes-Benz is going to replace the 6.2L V8 it currently offers in its AMG models with a turbo-charged 5.5L.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class
With the death of the CLK, Mercedes-Benz is missing a smaller entry level coupe in its lineup. The E-Class coupe is nice, but definitely not cheap with a starting price north of $48K. Mercedes is reportedly working on a new C-Class coupe which will be launched for the 2011 model year.

Mercedes E-Class E63 AMG Tuning Program

Mercedes E-Class E63 AMG
VÄTH Automobiltechnik has unveiled their new tuning program for the Mercedes E 63 AMG.

Dubbed the VÄTH V63RS, the car features a sinister exterior with a starless grille (€797), a boot spoiler (€333), a carbon fiber diffuser (€1,773), and a carbon fiber front lip spoiler (€1,416). Other styling tweaks include a suspension lowering module, which reduces the ride height by 30 mm, (€821) and 20-inch forged three-piece alloy wheels wrapped in high performance rubber (€8,211).

Mercedes-Benz SL Night Edition and SLK Grand Edition

Mercedes-Benz SL Night EditionMercedes-Benz has announced two special edition SL and SLK models. The SL Night Edition is not a reference to when it can be driven but rather to the colours used inside and out. Exterior paint finish is a designo magno night black matt matched with 19-inch AMG five-spoke alloys in a two-tone gloss finish and darkened lights on both ends. It is also identifiable by a Night Edition badge on the front wings.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

2010 Mercedes Benz E Class Front Closeup

Stuttgart engineers are putting the years of cost-cut me-too Benzes behind them. Ditto the endless distractions of the Chrysler affair. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class represents Daimler’s contrition for those sins. Like the recent C and S, the new E-Class is a return-path to what people always loved Mercedes for: a solid, safe, comfortable, conservative car in which you can invest utter faith.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been progress — it’s clearly part of the new design generation. The E posts impressive economy and performance numbers thanks to careful weight reduction, low aero drag, and powertrain improvements. It inherits a panoply of fancy driver-assist systems from the S-Class. But overall, the impression is that nothing has been done to upset the solid evolution and granite-like quality.

The design sits somewhere between crisp and boxy, with a bluff front end desperate (almost too desperate) to imply status. The flank design is pleasing, with good sculpture and, in the fairing behind the rear wheelhouse, a sly reference to its ancestor the 1953 “ponton” Mercedes. The look is a bit busy, but there’s lots of surface detail and it’s hardly boring. And the aero performance is superb, with a Cd of just 0.28.

Inside, the instrument binnacle is equally bluff, and the switchgear and surfaces feel like they’re built for the end of time. All models get a high-mounted center ICE/Navigation screen with superb control logic and graphics. The cars we drove featured poly-adjustable

heated and cooled massaging seats, but the normal chairs are also shaped for a perfect long-distance driving position. Rear head-and legroom are carefully planned for this car’s pivotal role in the German taxi trade.

The bodyshell uses high-strength steel to produce better crash results than ever without adding weight. Indeed, the shell is optimized for the V-6 models: The V-8 and AMG editions get reinforcements, so that the base-engine cars aren’t unnecessarily heavy. To protect pedestrians who stray into its path, the rear of the hood pops up on impact to give their heads a cushioned landing.

A switch to a three-link front suspension improves crash performance, though it required a lot of development driving to ensure the dynamics weren’t compromised compared with the more complex previous design. The new suspension also improves component commonality with the C-Class. In fact, Mercedes engineers no longer talk of the C and E being separate platforms.

On the active safety side, a bundled option is radar cruise control with collision mitigation. If the driver neglects to react to a closing gap ahead, it will sound a warning, then tighten the seatbelts, next tap the brakes, and finally, if the driver still remains unresponsive once it deems a crash inevitable, apply the brakes fully. “The electronic crumple zone,” Mercedes calls it. There’s also a night-vision option, lane-change blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and, as standard, a drowsiness sensor.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was recently launched in the European market and tuned Brabus has already put together a tuning program for the new Mercedes-Benz sedan.

Besides all the body modifications (which we’re going to skip over and let you read about in the press release after the jump), Brabus is offering a 462-hp upgrade for the 382-hp 6.1L V8 Mercedes-Benz E550. That allows for 0 to 62 mph sprint in just 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 191 mph.

Along with a number of interior upgrades Brabus is also offering 20-inch light-alloy wheels for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. All components are backed by Brabus’s three-year/62,000 miles warranty.
